French Classes for Adults



 

AFSA offers adult classes year-round in Spring, Summer, and Fall.


Registration deadline for Spring 2026 classes is December 31st.
Registration deadline for Summer 2026 classes is May 31st.

*Registration deadline for Fall 2025 classes is 5pm on August 29th.


*PLEASE NOTE CHANGE! Change due to early occurrence of Labor Day.

As of 5pm on August 29th, any class(es) which have not met minimum enrollment (i.e. 4 students) will be cancelled. Spaces are limited...Sign-up early!
Some on-line classes will be capped at 6 students. Some in-person classes will be capped at 8 students.
  
The only way to guarantee a spot is to pre-pay/register before the registration deadline.  No French class inquiries (e-mails or phone calls) will be fielded Saturday, August 30th - Monday, September 8th. AFSA's Office Manager will be out of the office for Labor Day, traveling without access to internet or phone.

Exploring the Pilgrimage Routes to Santiago de Compostela w/Marie-Pierre (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

This culture class will highlight the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. Santiago de Compostela, or the “Way of St. James”, is a popular route for hikers, cyclists, and organized tour groups terminating at the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia (northwestern Spain), which purports to hold the remains of St. James. Classes will be comprised of some lecturing and shared texts to be read aloud by students for practice speaking. At the end of this course, students will have the inspiration and recommendations to plan their own visit to the area. Note on level: This class is suitable for A2 (Advanced Beginners) or A1.5 students. This class is not suitable for Absolute Beginners.

French Pop Music w/Danica (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

This course explores fun and popular French songs from recent years by artists such as Big Flo & Oli, Vianney, GIMS, Angèle, and Stromae. We will listen to the songs/watch music videos, discuss and decode lyrics, and learn a bit about the artists themselves.

Le Petit Prince w/Khadija (In-Person –Location: 8900 Starcrest)

Workshops

Le Petit Prince is often described as a “children’s book for grown-ups”. It is a charming tale about life and friendship. Students will learn about the author, Antoine de Saint-Exupéry; practice speaking French, reading aloud in class; and engage in group discussions about the central themes of the book. Students have the choice to purchase a copy of the book or find/download their own PDF copy to use in class.  This class is not suitable for Absolute Beginners.

Let’s play with homophones w/Juliette (In-Person –Location: 8900 Starcrest)

Workshops

French is filled with homophones, words that are spelled differently, but are pronounced the same way, for example: la mer, la mère, and le maire.

Each set of homophones will be followed by an exercise. All exercises will be done in class. No homework, just a fun time!

This class is suitable for A2 (Advanced Beginners) or A1.5 students. This class is not suitable for Absolute Beginners.

The focus of this 2-week class is Noël. Practice French while learning about the unique holiday traditions of France. Classes will be comprised of some lecturing and shared texts to be read aloud by students for practice speaking. At the end of this course, students will know vocabulary words associated with les decorations et le sapin and classic chant-- Petit Papa Noël. This class is suitable for A2 (Advanced Beginners) or A1.5 students. This class is not suitable for Absolute Beginners.

Speaking French with Confidence w/Danica (Zoom/On-line)

Workshops

This course addresses common lexical challenges for students of French such as verbs that require specific prepositions or no preposition, pairing direct and indirect objects with verbs, false cognates, and French words with multiple meanings. This class is not intended for absolute beginners.
