French Classes for Adults

 

AFSA offers adult classes year-round in Spring, Summer, and Fall.


Registration Deadlines: 

Registration deadline for most Summer 2026 classes is May 31, 2026.
*However! For classes which begin the first week of June, registration will close one week prior to that class's official start date.
After May 31, any classes which have not met the required minimum enrollment may be cancelled.
If a class has met its enrollment minimum, but has not reached full capacity by the registration deadline, it may be possible to enroll beyond the May 31st deadline. 

Registration deadline for Fall 2026 classes is August 31, 2026.
Registration deadline for Spring 2027 classes is December 31, 2026.

Beginner French – A1.3 w/Danica (Zoom/online)

Regular Courses

This class is for students looking to build a foundation in the French language. Classes are progressive. Absolute beginners work their way from A1.1 onto A1.2 onto A1.3, etc. From A1, students move on to A2, to B1, to B2, etc. Textbook is not included in fee. Students will need to purchase: Easy French Step-by-Step 1st Edition by Myrna Bell Rochester (ISBN-13 ‏ : ‎ 978-0071453875) .

Schedule: Saturdays July 11th - August 15th (6-weeks) 4:30pm – 6:30pm

French for Spanish Speakers – Absolute Beginner w/Gwen (Zoom/online)

Workshops

Is Spanish your native language? Are you interested in learning French for the first-time ever? If yes/si/oui, this class is for you! There are similarities between Spanish and French that can provide an advantage to Spanish speakers when learning French. This course will capitalize on advantages and simultaneously work to overcome some of the most common mistakes made by Spanish-native speakers.

Dates: Tuesday, July 14h – August, 4th  (4-weeks) 6:30pm-8pm

h. À la découverte des homophones/Let's Play With Homophones w/Juliette (In-Person – 8900 Starcrest Dr)

Workshops

French is filled with homophones, words that are spelled differently, but are pronounced the same way, for example: la mer, la mère, and le maire. Each set of homophones will be followed by an exercise. All exercises will be done in class. No homework, just a fun time!

Schedule: Thursdays July 30th - August 20th  (4-weeks) 6:30pm - 8pm

Lecture à voix haute/Let’s read out loud w/Juliette (In-Person – 8900 Starcrest Dr)

Workshops

Each week, you’ll receive a series of texts, and you’ll be asked to prepare the reading of one of the texts (for example, making sure you understand the text, so you can put the right intonation, or marking the liaisons on the page). In class, participants will take turns reading out loud. It’s a great way to improve pronunciation and gain some confidence.

Schedule: Thursdays July 2nd - July 23rd (4-weeks) 6:30pm - 8pm

Workshops

This French Culture course will deepen your knowledge of French culture, language, and gastronomy while exploring the history of the second biggest city in France: Lyon. You will explore the history: from a prehistoric Celtic settlement, the capital of silk trade, and to the French capital of gastronomy. This class is open to all levels. All resources will be provided in the class itself - no textbook required.

Schedule: Tuesday, July 14th – August 4th (4-weeks) 4pm – 5:30pm

Vocabulary Building/Enrichissons notre vocabulaire – Session III w/Juliette (Zoom/online)

Workshops

Each week, we’ll read a text together (news article, recipe, general text, etc.), and we’ll build together a vocabulary list based on the text. You’ll discover the whole text in class. It’s a great class to challenge yourself by using your deductive skills on the spot, the participants will be able to brainstorm, and you’ll receive tips about building a vocabulary list. Facultative homework: each participant will be able to send the teacher 3-5 sentences with the words of the lesson to receive a personalized correction.

Schedule: Mondays July 27th - August 17th (4-weeks) 6:30pm-8pm
